Safety Champions & Felicitations
Suckling Transport became the 51st Driving for Better Business Champions at the organisation’s safety day in Leeds recently.
Driving for Better Business campaign director Caroline Scurr, said “Suckling Transport is a great example of good leadership in a small business. The hands-on approach by the company’s managing director is exactly the type of occupational road risk management and leadership that we encourage in business.
“Suckling Transport has recognised that road crashes can be hugely disruptive to its business and the well-being of staff. The implementation of a wide range of safe driving initiatives has triggered major benefits that other public and private sector fleets, irrespective of their size, should adopt.” The Company’s first presentation as Champions will be for Essex County Council at Southend on 3rd February 2011.
Felicitations

“Congratulations” (Dr Will Murray).
“Congratulations” (Eddie Jenkinson, Somerfield).
A New Director and NEBOSH Success
Alan Dodson was formally appointed as a Director of Suckling Transport at the Company’s Annual General Meeting in December. Alan
joined the company as Financial Controller in September 2002. He celebrated his new appointment with a cake organised by his colleagues.
Joining the celebrations also was Health and Safety Assistant, Sarah Andrews who recently passed her NEBOSH examination with distinction.
Candidates have 5 years to successfully pass the 3 elements of the course but Sarah passed all 3 elements, with distinction, at her first attempt in one year.
Well done Sarah and Congratulations Alan!
Road Safety Week
The staff at Suckling Transport certainly entered into the spirit of Road Safety Week in November.

The week was marked by several events. Firstly, employees participated in a road safety quiz. For every completed answer sheet that was returned the Company donated £1.00 to the safety organisation Brake. Employees who successfully answered every question right were entered into a draw to receive a prize.
Booklets regarding road safety and this year’s message ‘kids say slow down’ were sent to every employee to raise awareness.
Staff at head office also held a ‘wear it bright day’. All office staff dressed up brightly and donated money to the charity and there was a poster competition for employee’s children and some of them visited head office to show off their posters and receive prizes. Staff raised £90.00 for Brake and the Company sponsored a road safety banner.

Have a Safe Journey
Following the success of its Zero Incident Project, Suckling Transport has launched a new road safety
initiative.
ZIP focused on the safety culture, together with driver and vehicle management issues. “Have a safe journey” will focus on Journey Management, with managers conducting safety observations and intensive journey management checks to eliminate speeding. The Safe Havens project, route hazard management and site route risk assessments will also ensure that every driver’s journey is made safe.
The Company continues to see an improved safety performance as a result of these initiatives. Insurance providers normally view a rolling 3-year period for claims experience and, on this basis, Suckling Transport’s claims fell by 36% in 2009 and 24% this year.
Focus Groups 2011
The introduction of Focus Groups 2 years ago produced a significant improvement in the Company’s performance across all four parts of its business covered by the project.
Service, safety, cost and the environment have all benefited from the ideas and actions of the 27 Focus Groups. Two years ago the teams were selected randomly. Last year there was more science applied to the team selections, with 8 members in the safety groups and 4 in the other groups. In 2011, variable team sizes has enabled staff members to join the teams they feel best placed to have an impact on.
Apart from further improvements to our safety record, groups will particularly be looking for cost efficiencies and service improvements.

Decade of Action
The United Nations has announced the launch date for the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020). It will be on 11th May 2011. Governments international agencies, civil society organizations and private companies are encouraged to launch initiatives on that day. The plan calls for action on: building road safety management capacity; upgrading the safety of road infrastructure; developing the safety of vehicles; enhancing the behaviour of road users; and improving emergency services.
If you have any suggestions on what contribution we can make, please visit our website and leave a message on the new Suggestion Box.
New Vehicles 2011
Suckling Transport has an ambitious vehicle and trailer replacement programme for 2011.
20 vehicles are expected to be replaced this year, mainly on the ConocoPhillips contract at Coryton and the Shell Contract at Grangemouth.
There is also a plan to replace 40 tank trailers over the next 3 years.
The first of these trailers will enter service late spring and are destined for Aberdeen and Coryton. Further details of the vehicle and trailer replacement programme will be provided in the next News Bulletin.

Team of the Quarter
We are tempted to name all our drivers as the team of the quarter this time round. Their incredible performance during the blizzard conditions that hit so many parts of the UK recently provided a great challenge for our drivers. Thank you to everyone for continuing to make deliveries where it was safe to do so.
As representatives of that effort, the team of the quarter is Aberdeen, who managed to keep working as normally as possible until 17th December. Well done to them, but thanks to everyone for their efforts on behalf of our customers.
Emergency Response
Suckling Transport held a full-scale emergency response exercise in Grays in November.
The exercise involved Suckling Transport, Nustar Terminals, OAMPS and the local Fire and Rescue service.
Fuel Efficiency
Posters have been placed at each of our terminals on the subject of Fuel Efficiency. The aim of these, together with on-going driver training is to improve our fuel consumption and reduce fuel expenditure in 2011.
Please take a moment to read and think about these posters and how they can help improve your own MPG figures. A questionnaire will be sent out in early 2011 for drivers to complete and return. The driver with the highest score will receive a prize. Lets reduce our carbon footprint.
Driver of the Year
The winner of the Suckling Transport Driver of the Year Award will be announced in the Spring issue of the News Bulletin. 2010 was another great year for safety. The Company’s motor insurance claims record fell again, which suggests the race for the title will be very close again.
24 Shell contract drivers, including previous winners Kevin Tuff and Michael James are among the leading group, along with TankShare driver Gregory McLeod. Employees based at Hythe, Avonmouth and Plymouth have the best chance of bringing the trophy back to England for the first time since 2004.
